Working with Nonstandard Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Most of the research in foundations of mathematics that I do in some way or another involves the use of nonstandard models. I will give a few examples, and indicate what is involved. 1. General algebra and measurable cardinals. An unexpectedly direct connection. 2. Borel selection and higher set theory. A descriptive set theoretic context extensively pursued by some functional analysts. 3. Equational Boolean relation theory and Mahlo cardinals. A discrete mathematical context. 4. We conclude with an adaptation of 1 to weak second order logic. Some innocent looking statements in general algebra turn out to be equivalent to the existence of a measurable cardinal. In fact, the first measurable cardinal turns out to be clearly identifiable in a basic context in general algebra. Here an algebra is just a relational structure based on finitely many constant and function symbols and no relation symbols. PROPOSITION 1.1. Every algebra with a sufficiently large domain has a proper extension with the same countable subalgebras up to isomorphism. PROPOSITION 1.2. Every algebra with a sufficiently large domain has a proper extension with the same finitely generated subalgebras up to isomorphism.

Nonstandard working schedules and health: the systematic search for a comprehensive model
BACKGROUND Theoretical models on shift work fall short of describing relevant health-related pathways associated with the broader concept of nonstandard working schedules. Shift work models neither combine relevant working time characteristics applicable to nonstandard schedules nor include the role of rest periods and recovery in the development of health complaints. Therefore, this paper aime...

متن کاملWorking nonstandard schedules and variable shifts in low-income families: associations with parental psychological well-being, family functioning, and child well-being.
Longitudinal data from the New Hope Project--an experimental evaluation of a work-based antipoverty program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin--was used to explore concurrent and lagged associations of nonstandard schedules and variable shifts with parental psychological well-being, regularity of family mealtimes, and child well-being among low-income families. Working a combination of variable shifts and...
متن کاملNonstandard Schedules and Young Children’s Behavioral Outcomes Among Working Low-Income Families
This article focuses on how maternal employment in nonstandard schedules at night, on the weekends, or that rotate on a weekly basis influence preschoolers’ behavioral outcomes. Examining low-income working mothers and their children aged 2 – 4 years from the Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study (N 1⁄4 206), we find that maternal nonstandard schedules are associated with negative...
متن کاملThe relationship between nonstandard working and mental health in a representative sample of the South Korean population.
In light of escalating job insecurity due to increasing numbers of nonstandard workers, this study examined the association between nonstandard employment and mental health among South Korean workers. We analyzed a representative weighted sample of 2086 men and 1194 women aged 20-64 years, using data from the 1998 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Nonstandard employment i...

OBJECTIVES This study assessed the extent to which working various types of nonstandard shift schedules (eg, night and evening shifts) is associated with the risk of occupational injuries or illnesses. METHODS Multivariate analyses were conducted using data from 13 years (1987 to 2000) of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) encompassing 110 236 job records and over 82 000 person-...
